Compost Bins Construction

Construction the compost bays has been great fun, although broken down into several days over the past couple of months.

We started by placing the wooden palettes in place to makes sure they were the same size and then fixed them together. As we are not construction with any plastic, the next item used was wire mesh around the full interior, this too was recycled from the fencing which we took down around the boundary.

Over this was laid a layer of hessian which was stapled back to the timber palettes. The ground was laid with cardboard and we were ready to go! To make sure the palettes stayed in place we screwed a storn piece of timber to the base to hold them together so they didnt drift apart.

The next fun was adding the front on to the compost bin, which really tidied it up well, as the compost area can sometimes be so messy, and in a garden where it will be viewed from several directions, we dont really want it to be an eyesore.

One down and one to go! We created this using donated and recycled wood, cut to size and slotted in the front here, so they will be easily removable when we need to remove the compost. Then at some point we need to add a lid on too.
