Early start at the community garden this morning with this beautiful sunrise! You can hear traffic in the background but also loads of birds in the area.

Thanks so much to Rick who's been helping out with clearing the thick layer of grass and old membrane away from under the fruit trees, this now hopefully allows to improve the health of these trees, which aren't that big, and for a good yeild this year.

It also allows us to to improve the space with improved access and planting.

🌱 While the structure was underway thanks to Marks building skills, Bridgette's focus was turned to the Community Garden plot boundaries. Swipe across to see the progress.

The previously installed fencing posts with chicken wire mesh was unstable and falling down in most locations, plus it doesn't have a very welcoming feel to acommunity space and rather giving the feeling of a petting zoo fence 😅......We can save and reuse this material elsewhere ....(keep an eye out for our compost bay build 🪱)

Once the boundaries were all cleared, and fences removed, timber pieces were laid around the perimeter, which allowed us to clearly mark out the edges and measure accurate dimensions for the future design of the space. We also strimmed the edges down where the grass was growing quite long.

👀 Bridgette and Pamela will be at the Community Garden on Sundays, and if you're on the volunteer mailing list....keep an eye out for an email soon and look forward to continuing!

It was such an effort of a job, but its looking great so far. ✏️ This step is essential for planning the layout of planting beds, pathways, access and other garden features, as well as measuring and budgeting for materials we will be needing soon.

Next up - we move onto the exciting task of designing the space!

Progress shot of the structure 🙌
It's looking great! Although it’s only partially complete as there’s still quite a few elements to finish off, which include the side frames, external cladding, the front door, the flooring and rainwater harvesting area….. but we’re on our way!

This was worked up in 3D first for us to review the expected outcome and dimensions to work from, although it was definitely a fun challenge, because much of the timber we used was donated rather than purchased new.

After an early start with the sun shining and a beautiful blue sky, we’ve been working the long list of tasks, and the progress is already looking great!

Thanks so much to Mark Whyman Landscapes for helping construct the new roof structure and to Jeremy for inspecting and pruning the fruit trees.

We're excited to have a few good fruit trees on this plot and after a bit of care and love we hope they will give us lots of fruit this year

At the garden this week, we've taken everything out of the existing broken structure to allow us access to take it down and build a new shed structure and roof, and was a great surprise to find loads of ludy bugs.

Out for a little wander having a look at the different levels of creativity other plot holders have put into their allotment garden space. I love seeing the preferance of veg choice they’re growing or the design layout of their spaces.

There’s lots of ideas to takeaway and get going with our community garden and growing space…..and time to get a to do list going for all the volunteers.
