Design Progress Update

Over the last few days, significant progress has been made on the framework of the new structure, and the project is starting to take shape! The structure is only partially complete, as there’s still quite a few elements to finish off, as listed in more detail below….. but we’re on our way!

Before any physical work began, the structure was designed in 3D in Sketchup, which was crucial to visualize the final outcome and ensure the dimensions would work well within the garden space and align with the materials we had to hand. Using 3D modelling helped identify potential issues early and allowed for adjustments.

One of the unique aspects of this project is the use of donated timber rather than buying new materials. This added a layer of complexity because the wood varied in size and condition. The 3D model helped accommodate these variations by allowing flexible design tweaks. It was a fun challenge to adapt the plan to fit the available resources.

Next Steps

The main framework is now standing strong. The vertical supports and horizontal beams are in place, giving a clear sense of the structure’s size and shape, with the roof installed to the correct fall to ensure rainwater falls in the correct direction.

The next elements to complete include:

  • Side frames to be created;

  • Cladding to the exterior of the structure to enclose the space;

  • The door is yet to be installed;

  • Completion of the interior floor to provide a stable base;

  • A rainwater harvesting area will be added to make the structure more sustainable as well as adding an aesthetic element to the garden.

Setting out the plots

With the structure underway, attention was then turned to the garden plot boundaries, as the previously installed fencing with chicken wire and posts was unstable and falling down in several locations. We chose not to retain this fencing as doesn't create an inviting atmosphere for a community garden, but rather giving the feeling of a mini zoo enclosure.

Once the boundaries were all cleared, timber pieces were laid around the whole perimeter of both plots, which allowed us to clearly mark out the edges and take accurate measurements of the plots. This step is essential for planning the layout of planting beds, pathways, and other garden features.

Feeling satisfied with the progress after a long day, the sun started to set over the landscape and allotment, with the evening setting in with a beautiful golden bright sunset, providing inspiration and motivation to keep going.
